Boudoir FAQ Answered:

Is being stressed normal? How can I calm myself down?

Absolutely! Almost everyone is nervous when they decide to do this type of shoot. It is totally expected. My goal is to provide a safe and comfortable atmosphere during your session. Let's turn on your playlist and jam out to your favorite music!

What type of lingerie should I buy for my session?

It is honestly a very personal choice. Start by choosing your favorite color! You want to make sure whatever you buy fits you comfortably, not too tight and not too baggy. If you have areas that you most certainly want to cover, such as your stomach, try high-waists, corsets, or a gown! If you're going to simply break the ice, bring a button down. This is one way to warm up in front of the camera. Want a boost in your chest? Find a supportive bra and panties to match. The options are endless. Have fun shopping!

Does my age or size matter?

Beauty comes in all ages and sizes. We welcome thick, thin, young, and old. We encourage you to have this opportunity to experience self-love.

Why Choose a Male Boudoir Photographer?

Boudoir is an amazing experience. I believe in it to its core. While it is most common to have a woman photographer, I want to share a few reasons you should consider hiring a male boudoir photographer for your experience. Why I have a hetero-male eye…I strive for an elegant beauty and sexiness in my images. I want the women I photograph to love looking at their photographs.

In this article, we’re going to explore the advantages of shooting with a professional male boudoir photographer, something you may or may not have considered, and being a male boudoir photographer myself, I think I have a unique insight on this topic.

1. Men and women typically see women differently. Through a different set of experiences, a different mentality, and a different intent/goals. What men find sexy and what women find sexy are typically different things. A woman might say, "That old tank top? That isn't sexy." But a man might say "I love that tank top on you, when you are casual and walking around the house is when you are sexiest.” A business suit can be sexy with the right expression and attitude.

2. I've been told that since my clients are getting these portraits as a gift for their husband, they want a man's opinion and perspective.
Me: “Which pictures do you want in your gift album?”
Her: “You pick them out since you are a guy, you will know what he likes more than I will!”
In the same vein if I needed to get a gift for my girlfriend I would probably ask a woman for advice too.

3. A common consensus is that it can be easier for a woman to show her sexy side in front of the camera with a male photographer because its a dynamic they are somewhat familiar with.

4. Playboy, FHM, Maxim, and Sports Illustrated Swim Suit are mostly shot by male photographers. Boudoir as an industry is dominated by women photographers because of the perception that the client and her spouse will feel more comfortable if they are shot by a woman. Know that both male and female photographers are focusing on posing, lighting, emotion and experience. We are really not looking at 'you' but at creating the best images. I promise you will have a comfortable, fun and professional experience.

curvy girl in bra and panties

5. Find the photographer who makes you feel accepted, sexy, and with a style you can't resist. They will leave you on cloud 9 reminding you that you are beautiful, powerful, sexy and special. The photographer should be the best at their craft and make you feel relaxed and comfortable above all.

Although the genre of boudoir photography is dominated by female photographers, there is a small minority of us who are male — and like anything, there are advantages to shooting with both.

By the way, just to keep things simple, I’m writing this from a heterosexual perspective because taking into account all the combinations that can arise from all the various sexual orientations is beyond the scope of this article.

Your (Final Moments) Boudoir Session Checklist

Gearing up for a boudoir session? Girl, I’ve got you covered! I know you’ve already got your outfit planned and your makeup inspiration look pulled, but have you checked off these boxes?

Gearing up for a boudoir session? Girl, I’ve got you covered! I know you’ve already got your outfit planned and your makeup inspiration look pulled, but have you checked off these boxes?

  • Come Up with an Empowering Mantra: Having the nervous jitters before your shoot is completely normal, but I’ve found that one of the best ways to pump yourself up is to repeat an affirmative mantra or positive phrase! Maybe it’s “I’m sexy and I know it!” or “I am grateful for all that I am,” or “May I be kind to myself today and always.”

  • Make Yourself a Fun Playlist: Great music can really set you up for a killer shoot. Choose 20 to 30 of your favorite songs (I recommend mostly upbeat pieces to keep energy up) and be ready to press play the day of your shoot. No playlist? No sweat. I’ve got a few to choose from!

  • Model the Heck Out of Your Outfit: Reserve 30 to 60 minutes sometime between now and your boudoir session to put on your outfits. The more comfortable you are in the outfits, the more comfortable you’ll be on the day of the shoot! Also, tell yourself how awesome you look in each one and call out your favorite physical feature in each outfit.

  • Write Down Why You’re Doing This: Take a good 15 to 20 minutes to write down the reasons why you decided to do a boudoir shoot. Maybe it’s to embrace your body or you want to give a milestone gift to your partner. Whatever the reason, this session is a celebration of those reasons, and we’re going to have a heck of a time.

Picking Out Your Boudoir Session Outfits

Maybe he loves you in the color red, or he still talks about that baby doll number you wore a couple years ago. If he's into sports or a certain hobby, play into that, as well.

3. Opt for lingerie that flatters your favorite parts. If you've got an impressive rack (yes, we're going there), then choose something that really shows of that feature. Maybe you're a fan of your own derriere and want to show him the goods, too. Choose a piece that accentuates whatever features you love most about yourself.

Trying to figure out what to wear at your boudoir session? We've got a few tips to help you out:

1. Wear what makes you feel sexy. Boudoir sessions are all about bringing your sexy side, so if you put something on and you feel uncomfortable, move on to the next option. Consider it sort of like searching for the perfect wedding dress. When you put it on and can't help but spin in front of the mirror or think, "Heck yes, I'm sexy!" then that is the piece you should wear on shoot day.

2. Consider what he likes, too. Maybe she/he loves you in the color red, or he/she still talks about that baby doll number you wore a couple years ago. If he's into sports or a certain hobby, play into that, as well.

3. Opt for lingerie that flatters your favorite parts. If you have impressive décolletage, then choose something that really shows of that feature. Maybe you're a fan of your own derriere and want to show him/her the goods, too. Choose a piece that accentuates whatever features you love most about yourself.

4. Footwear matters, too. It's so easy to go into a less-than-classy vibe depending on your footwear. Our suggestion: keep it simple. Patterns, baubles, bells, whistles, and more than three inches of heel can all lean “too much.” Instead, opt for shoes that scream "sexy sophistication." FYI: Heels can also do a lady good when it comes to posture and accentuating muscles in her legs.

Avoid these Boudoir Faux Pas During your Session

Bad Tan Lines/Sunburn – If you have not been tanning recently, don’t tan just before your session. You can get sunburn or really bad tan lines, which are not flattering in photos. Also avoid spray tans at all cost, as they tend to photograph poorly.

Getting drunk at your session – If you are nervous about your session, it’s OK to have a glass of wine to rest your nerves.

Getting drunk at your session – If you are nervous about your session, it’s OK to have a glass of wine to rest your nerves. That said, don’t get wasted before or during your session. This is one of the worst things you can do. Your eyes will be blood shot and droopy and it’s just a recipe for disaster.

Woman wearing a leather jacket open to expose her chest.

Choosing the wrong sized outfits – Choose lingerie that is just the right size for you. You don’t want loose lingerie that gives your body no shape or hides your beautiful curves. On the other hand, lingerie that is too tight can be unflattering.

Heavy Makeup – We strongly recommend getting a makeup artist for your session. You don’t want to slather the makeup on too thickly. It’s more about accentuating your natural features and making you feel – and look – stunning.

Forgetting to shave/wax – Always remember to shave or wax any exposed area that needs to looks smooth and sexy. The ‘au naturel’ look is so ‘70s. Unless you’re going for that vibe, please remember this tip.

You can totally rock the button down shirt, tie, and briefcase. If you need help, give us a call or send us an email and we can help come up with something.

Bring some along for an added personal touch.

Fantasy – Does your partner have a fantasy? Surprise him by dressing up for your session. If he’s a big Star Wars fan and always wanted you to wear a gold bikini like Princess Leia, now would be a good time to break out that costume for some sexy sci-fi photos.

Hobbies – What does he like to do for fun? Does he play guitar, read comic books, paint? Bring along items from his hobbies. Is he a country boy? Bring a cowboy hat and boots. Does he enjoy carpentry? Bring his construction hat and tool belt along.

As long as you're over 21, that’s totally fine with us.

Do you provide the wardrobe?

We do not provide your wardrobe. This is something you’ll have to pick out and bring along yourself. If you need help choosing an outfit, we can definitely give you some suggestions, though.

Boudoir pose with a prop.

I want share these pictures with my partner, but I don't want loose prints floating around. Any ideas for the best gift?

This is a very common concern and we totally understand. We recommend placing an order for our little black book or one of our beautiful folio boxes. This is much more discreet and will keep all of your images in one place and not floating around. For more information on these products, just ask.

What should I bring to my boudoir session?

For our sessions, we suggest two to three different outfits and any props you may want to incorporate. Need help choosing props? Check out this blog article we’ve written on incorporating your partner’s interests by clicking here.

Can I bring a friend?

Yes, you can bring a friend if you think it will help you relax. However, sometimes an extra set of eyes has the opposite effect, even if it is a friend. They are more than welcome to come, but if they are making you uncomfortable, they may have to wait out in the lobby.

Will my session be with a male or female photographer?

My team is composed of all women, but I am a male. I have spent years developing an understanding of how women want to see themselves. My clients tell me how comfortable they feel working with me.

Do you do touchups?

Yes, we will smooth skin and do some basic retouching on all of your portraits.

I’m not a model – are boudoir photos still flattering even if my body isn’t perfect?

Absolutely! Nobody is perfect and every woman is sexy. If you have any specific concerns, contact us and we can talk about it!

Do you do outdoor boudoir sessions?

We currently do not have our own outdoor location to do this, but if you have some private land, let us know and we’ll set something up. We do offer outdoor boudoir sessions, but only if they take place on a private location. It also has to be in a secluded area, so nobody can see us during the session. We do this to protect you and our company.

Do I have control over who sees my images?

Yes, most certainly. We will only share photos if you have given us permission and have approved the images for sharing. We respect your wishes and won't post or share any images if you’d prefer they stay private.

Have a question that’s not listed here? Contact us and we can answer it for you.

What is Boudoir Photography? I’ll Explain.

Different forms of boudoir photography exist both in terms of style/approach and level of nudity. As is the case with any photography, it’s important to seek a photographer whose style matches with your personal aesthetic. For example, some specialize is high contrast black and whites, others prefer a moody editing style, and some take a bright light and color-dense approach.

Boudoir photography has been an artform since literally the invention of cameras. Still, there’s a bit of confusion surrounding the topic, so I wanted to take a second to dispel some myths and tell you exactly what boudoir photography is. In short: it’s a series of tasteful, artful sensual images — usually of a woman, but sometimes of a couple or even a man.

Example of boudoir photography of a woman

White sheet style of boudoir

Kaliah in a simple night shirt

Most boudoir photographers leave it to the client to decide how much skin is exposed during the session. Some clients are OK baring all, and the images are shot in a way that’s creative, classy, and genuinely artful. Other clients prefer to do a lingerie session which can be just as provocative and sensual. Others yet prefer to go a flirty, less exposed route — maybe they wear an oversized sweater, a sport’s jersey, or her partner’s shirt. Boudoir photography runs the gamut and creating a customized experience with your photographer is part of the fun!

FAQ: Will My Boudoir Images Be Posted Online?

When you have a boudoir session with me, one of the first things we’ll discuss is your privacy. Some women prefer to have zero images shared anywhere. Some are OK with me posting to a private and secure group online for other clients to see, and some don’t mind having their images shown on my Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, or Website.

A common question I’m asked about my boudoir photography is whether a client’s images are going to end up on my website or on social media. That makes sense because I have images of other clients on these outlets, but the only images you’re seeing are from women who decided they were 100% OK with those images being shared. None of my clients are obligated to have their images posted and, in fact, a large number of my clients opt to keep their session pictures private.

Will my boudoir pictures be posted online?

You also reserve the right to have the images removed at any time. If you prefer to keep everything private, that’s 100% OK and an option that many of my clients choose. To help ensure peace of mind, do note that I have taken extra protective measures in my home and on my computer to ensure your images are steel-trap safe.

Modest Boudoir? Madi W…

We created a sexy modest glamour boudoir set for this conservative woman who wanted something special for herself.

Madi wanted something she called a “perfume ad”. Something not to sexy, not to revealing. Modest. A modest boudoir. A little bit glamour, a little bit boudoir. We started of with a fabulous moody portrait in a tank top.

woman sitting, wearing a tank-top, dark, misty sexy glamour portrait

We added a sweater and got what I think are some killer moody portraits and headshots.

You can see by the poses and the lighting that we were working to create some moody images that gave a sense of quietness, or even a bit of longing. Most of the images you see here were created for her in both color and black and white. Keeping with the “not too sexy” theme she wore a simple black bralette.

Compare the black and white monochrome with the color. Which do you like best? I think options are fun to have.

The following image was her most daring “modest” look. She wanted a glamour look that wasn’t to revealing but a bit tempting.

blonde girl woman wearing jeans, lace panties and a black bralette

I left her hair alone to create a bit of a “lazy” look.

I love the challenge of creating portraits for women that match my style and meet their expectations and wants. Madi was a fun client and there were many more beautiful images from her session including some dance inspired photos. I would love to meet with you to see if we can create something of rare beauty for you too.

Aly

Aly, like most people who come into my studio wanted to have fun and to be able to relax and see herself as beautiful.

Aly, relaxed.

Why do women today do boudoir shoots?

About 30 percent of the time when a woman contacts me, it’s for a groom’s gift or an anniversary present. But I feel like once they do the shoot, they realize that it was really something they did for themselves. 70 percent of women these days are doing a boudoir session for themselves first and maybe their partner second. It is not like the past and just a gift for their partner. Now more and more women are realizing what an empowering and uplifting gift it is for themselves. It changes them for the better. Selflove is a powerful tool.

“I loved getting glam! Is there anything better than getting your hair and makeup done by a pro? I love seeing the transformation and feeling like a goddess.  Don’t wait! Don’t put it off until you’re the “right” weight or size. You are beautiful and deserve to be celebrated as you are! Marcee and the Glam Team will make you feel like the goddess you are, and you’ll be SO happy you did it! I loved the feeling I had when I put on my first outfit and looked in the mirror with my hair and makeup done. I was so proud of showing up for myself and celebrating my body.”

Aly decided she wanted to try posing in the buff. When a person feel safe, magic happens.

What will your boudoir experience be like?

Matila ~ Christmas Lights

Matila was really excited for this session. We used a little bit of ambient light in the room, but mostly light from the strands of Christmas lights you see. When I first met Matila it was a bit noisy and I didn’t hear her name right. She teased me about getting her name wrong. What can I say? Names are important. She brought 3 outfits and each one brings out a unique bit of personality. First a few pics, then a video.

Here is a video of some of her photos. No Preview because I age restrict on Youtube

What color outfits would you choose for a Christmas boudoir? I make your session easy by guiding you through poses, making sure to capture your most beautiful angles. I also always work with an assistant, and she helps with prep, setup, wardrobe, and all the little details to ensure you have a great experience.
